This website is created and maintained for the citizens of Velma, Oklahoma. Its purpose is to keep the citizens of Velma informed of the Towns meetings, agendas, and where their tax dollars are being spent. It is my hope to show your tax dollars working hard for you.
It is also created as a means of easy access to information to anyone. It is my goal to have all of the Velma Town Code on this site in the near future along with a searchable database for the Velma Cemetery.
I will be conducting research into the history of the Town of Velma, and would welcome all photos and information submitted. All photos will be returned to the owner and credit will be given to the contributor.
Community Profile
The town of Velma is located in Stephens County, 16 miles east of Duncan on State Highway 7.
As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 664, 247 households, and 187 families residing in the town. There are 290 housing units. The racial makeup of the town is 90.96% White, 0.00% African American, 8.28% Native American, 0.00%Asian 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 0.45% from two or more races. 1.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 247 households out of which 40.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.3% are married couples living together, 12.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23% are non-families. 21.% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.69 and the average family size is 3.15.
In the town the population is spread out with 29.1% under age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 97.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.6 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $30,341, and the median income for a family is $34,286. Males have a median income of $32,083 versus $16,136 for females.
